FORUM POSTING GUIDELINES : README

The DataNucleus forum is here to help users gain the maximum from use of DataNucleus. The support provided on this forum is not guaranteed, so if you expect an answer you ought to consider commercial support. You should bear in mind that DataNucleus is developed by a relatively small group of people who don't have much spare time for providing free support and so we have guidelines for use of this forum. Please abide by them. Anyone who actually contributes to DataNucleus, whether simply responding to forum posts, or contributing samples, is much much more likely to receive an answer here than someone just putting some vague message about something "not working" as they expected.

  • Commercial support is available to help you maximise the potential of your application is available at very competitive rates from us.
  • Read the documentation first ... for DataNucleus Access Platform. It is written for a reason. There are many worked examples for common situations in the docs. If not then search the forum for a similar problem
  • Use the latest released version. If that doesn't help then try Nightly Builds. These use current SVN and so you may find that your problem doesn't exist any longer
  • Debug your problem before posting. The DataNucleus Log is there for a reason, and if you set all logging to DEBUG level you have large amounts of information to help you isolate a problem. READ THE LOG. The answer to most questions is there
  • Having tried all of the above options, post on the Forum. We are not going to look at a massive post of someone's application. Keep the post clear and, demonstrate it with a simple clear example (by generating a testcase that follows the Problem Reporting Guide). We have very limited time so this is likely your best chance. Writing a testcase that follows that guide often focusses your attention on what you are doing and the answer is often found during that process.
  • In terms of the content of your post

    • State what version of DataNucleus "core", "api.jdo", "api.jpa", "store.rdbms", "enhancer" etc you are using. See the comment above about using the latest version
    • If you have an Exception, make sure you post the actual exception message AND the stack trace
    • If it is Java code or XML, please use the "Code" button so that your text will remain indented etc. Failure to do this will mean that it is difficult to read and is less likely to attract our attention

  • Support on this Forum is provided for free, but this means that we have little time to provide such support and we will typically provide links to the relevant document (if it exists) describing how to solve your problem, or (if a document doesnt exist) provide brief guidelines on what to look at. If you require something urgently then you should either purchase Commercial Support or make a Donation.
  • Unwillingness to provide DataNucleus-compliant test-cases that follow the aforementioned guide means that you are responsible for your problem and you ought to get the code and debug it.
  • While it is nice to receive suggestions of things to improve DataNucleus, it is actually way better to offer to do things since we already have ample things in our job lists.
  • Posts containing offensive material, personal attacks, etc will be removed. By posting on this forum you accept to respect people here and particularly the people who spent their time writing the software
  • People posting hyperlink spam on this forum will have accounts deleted, their posts removed, their IP address added to a blacklist and their ISP informed of their abuse (posting links here is pointless anyway since it is not indexed by Google etc). There is no appeal against such blacklisting; you are a retard.
